Power. The power to actually, materially improve people’s lives. Fix their potholes, raise wages, provide healthcare, and more! Plus another crucial ingredient of power (and therefore, of sexiness)...
Money. Lots of it. School board budgets routinely run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. County budgets often reach into the billions. The people we elect at these levels are the people who decide if your neighborhood pays for a new park—or pays for a new datacenter.
People. Ordinary People doing Extraordinary Things. Feisty People who are willing to fight hard for the thing that matters most to you, even when it is unpopular. Trailblazing People who beat the odds and become the first person of their race, their religion, their gender, their orientation to run for and win their office. Compassionate People who will represent your interests even if you can’t afford to lobby for their attention.

We have rights. On paper, at least. The people we elect at the local, county, and state level decide how easy, or how impossible, it is to actually access any of our so-called rights. They decide whether exercising our right to vote them in or out of office is easy and accessible, or onerous and inaccessible. American democracy is defended—or dismantled—at the state and local level.
